Our signature Bordeaux-style blend is medium-bodied and bursting with flavor; after a fruit-forward nose of cocoa, vanilla and sour cherry, the palate emphasizes mocha and tobacco through to a spicy, tannic finish.

Growing Conditions

The 2021 growing season in Virginia was characterized by moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall, allowing for slow and even ripening of the Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes. The combination of warm days and cool nights helped to retain the natural acidity and develop a wide array of flavors in the fruit.

Harvest

The Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness in the cool morning hours to preserve their freshness and quality. Upon arrival at the winery, the fruit was destemmed and crushed before undergoing a controlled fermentation process. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels to enhance its complexity and elegance.

The James Charles Winery 1913 Bordeaux Blend is a testament to our dedication to producing harmonious and memorable wines that celebrate the unique terroir of Virginia. Enjoy a glass and savor the rich flavors and refined elegance of this exceptional Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend.

Winemaking

Our 1913 Bordeaux Blend is a masterful combination of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, carefully chosen to create a harmonious and complex wine that showcases the best of both varietals. By aging the wine in French oak barrels, we've achieved a perfect balance between the rich fruit flavors, structured tannins, and toasty oak, resulting in a wine that is both bold and refined.

Aging

The 1913 Bordeaux Blend has excellent aging potential, with the structure and complexity to evolve gracefully for 7-10 years, allowing the flavors to further integrate and develop additional depth.

Nose

The nose reveals enticing aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry, underscored by hints of violet, black pepper, and a touch of vanilla from the oak aging.

Palate

On the palate, the wine offers a complex array of flavors, including ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and cassis, complemented by notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of cedar. The wine's firm tannins are beautifully integrated with the rich fruit flavors and toasty oak, leading to a long, harmonious finish.
